The Protagonist is a Revenant; their unique power places them at the center of many key events throughout the game, being both Operation Queenslayer and the Successor of her Blood.
Introduction[]
The Protagonist is the hero of the story of Code Vein. They were turned into a Revenant following the Great Collapse and played a critical role in Operation Queenslayer, having been the one to actually land the killing blow on the Queen. They are now a Freelance Revenant working with a team under the lead of Louis Amamiya in order to uncover the root of the Great Collapse, find a solution to Revenant situation and discover the truth of their own past.
It is later revealed that the Protagonist is the Successor of The Queen's Blood, which was the cause of their newfound ability to restore memories, bloodsprings, mistles and through the new blood code that they manifested, absorb the blood of other revenants, thus gaining access to their codes.
History[]
We learn a bit about the Protagonist’s past when you find a Vestige in the Cathedral of the Sacred Blood that contains the memories of the Protagonist. During Operation Queenslayer, the Protagonist wakes up in a medical tent as a Revenant. They are greeted by Karen who is there to inquire into any symptoms. This is interrupted when an alarm sounds, prompting Karen to wish the newly awakened Protagonist good luck. The alarm was used by Gregorio Silva to muster all available Revenants to begin the mission to eliminate the Queen. After the debriefing, Jack Rutherford sends his team out in pairs and partners with the Protagonist to search for the Queen. They fight through a few Lost and are found by the Queen's Knight, which marks the start of a dangerous battle to be followed up by the appearance of the Queen herself. Soon Silva joins the fight, shielding Jack and the Protagonist against the Queen's ranged attacks. Just as they seem to have gained the upper hand, the Queen counterattacks. The Protagonist avoids a direct hit but their Purifier Mask is knocked off, leaving them open to the affects of the Miasma. Jack attempts to save the Protagonist by throwing his sword at the Queen, but she catches the blade with her hands. While the Queen is distracted, the Protagonist stabs her through the heart with their Blood Veil, killing her, but inadvertently draining some of her blood in the process. With the Protagonist pushed to the edge of frenzy by the Queen's blood, Gregorio and Jack solemnly thank them for their bravery and sacrifice before Jack kills them with the intent of ending their suffering before they became fully corrupted.
The Protagonist survived however, awakening years after the fact at the bottom of a ravine, their memories of the incdent having been lost. They are kept company by Io, a mysterious girl in white who treats them with the utmost care as she tends to them and nurses them back from the brink of frenzy. Unfortunately, they are soon accosted by scavenging Revenant faction and taken captive, with the Protagonist being forced to hunt for Blood Beads, incentivized by an apparent threat to Io's well-being, the Protagonist departs with their assigned partner, Oliver Collins. Their mission changed however after meeting Louis Amamiya mid-hunt. Not long afterwards, the Protagonist encounters the Lost form of Oliver, having succumbed to the miasma and transformed into one of the Lost. After defeating Oliver, the Protagonist discovers a Vestige which Louis warns them not to touch. Io seems to know something they don't however and with her encouragement and support, the Protagonist forgoes Louis' warning and picks up the Vestige. Though it initially begins to cause frenzy in Protagonist, Io soothes them and continues calmly coaching them through the process. Finally, the Protagonist then unleashes the power of the Queen's Blood, purifying the Vestige and entering the memory of Oliver Collins. After the encounter, an amazed Louis suggests that the Protagonist use their power to help save the Revenants in Vein from starvation and ultimately, extinction. As Io helps them stand, the Protagonist accepts Louis's offer and the duo join him and the rest of the Revenants on their quest to save Vein.
Along their journey, the Protagonist discovers another vestige in the Cathedral of the Sacred Blood. Upon absorbing it, the vestige is revealed to belong to the Protagonist themselves, containing their forgotten memories of Operation Queenslayer and granting them access to their original blood code, "Queenslayer".
Powers and Abilities[]
- The Protagonist is a proficient fighter, having been trained and deployed as a soldier in Operation Queenslayer, even fighting alongside Jack Rutherford to defeat the Queen's Knight and take on the Queen, being the one to deal the killing blow to the Queen themselves.
- The Protagonist’s original blood code, Queenslayer, is a code well balanced for exploration and melee combat while featuring high health and endurance. This code was lost however, when they became the Successor of the Blood. As a result of draining the Queen's blood and being shot through the heart, the Protagonist was left with a code that their psychological manifestation of the Queen refers to as a "Void-Type" blood code. This unique blood code gives the Protagonist the ability to absorb the abilities and attributes of any blood code, even through a blood vestige.
- While the Protagonist's original blood code had gifts best suited for one-handed swords, halberds and bayonets, the Void-Type status allows them to use any weapon with maximum efficiency depending on the code they equip.
- The Protagonist is mentioned to be particularly resilient even among Revenants, who are known to possess enhanced durability and strength beyond that of a human being. Karen Amamiya mentioned as much to them during Operation Queenslayer, calling them surprisingly resilient when she noted that they survived critical damage to their heart in their first fight against the Queen.
- Like every Revenant in Vein, the Protagonist has the ability to regenerate cells with limited uses thanks to the BOR Parasite implanted in their heart.
- The Protagonist is able to safely unlock the memory echos inside Vestiges. In addition, the Protagonist can use those memories to restore a revenant’s heart in the case of the Successors, as well as use their blood to restore bloodsprings and clear the miasma by restoring or "activating" mistles.
Trivia[]
- The player can unlock the True Ending by repairing all of the Blood Codes of the Successors, restoring their memories when prompted. Lastly you must repair Io's Blood code and restore her memories in order to unlock the pathway to the ending. With this ending every successor is cured of frenzy by Io, who has taken on all of the Queen's Relics and transforms into a massive Bloodspring. The Protagonist and their companions choose to exit the red mist using the power of Io, who grants the Protagonist a golden Blood Bead during her transformation. They plan to help those surviving in the world outside the Gaol of the Mists.
- With the appearance of a Dyas Pita from the God Eater franchise near the end of the campaign, it can be assumed that these two series take place in the same world. This could mean that the Aragami from God Eater are the horrors talked about in the world of Vein. These suspicions are in spite of Code Vein developers explicitly stating that Code Vein would be in a universe separate from God Eater before the release of the game.
- The player can unlock the Neutral Ending by repairing the Blood Code and restoring the memories of at least one Successor. The Protagonist takes Silva's place on the Throne to maintain the Red Mist protecting Vein from the Horrors, Io remains beside unconscious Protagonist alone. After some time, Io turns to stone, whilst thanking them for the time they shared together. Io does comment in this ending that she will wait, “until the time of your awakening comes once again.” The remaining revenant must fight ever increasing numbers of the Lost with still decreasing supply of blood beads as “Vein sleeps again...for what might be called forever.”
- The player can unlock the Bad Ending by not repairing any Blood Codes of the Successors or restoring any memories. In this ending The Protagonist frenzies whilst trying to contain the power of all The Queen's relics, almost resulting in her regeneration through them. Louis uses a distraction from Jack and Yakumo to sneak behind them and stab the Protagonist through the heart, killing them. Louis will take Silva's place on the throne to maintain the Red Mist. The party disbands, each taking a relic with them. They return to the Successor's Crypt most important to them, thus becoming the new Successor in the process. Io will return to the Bloodspring where you first awoke with your weapon and hold it until she turns to ash.
